Eddy Covariance Flux Measurements Intensive online course 2021

The Eddy Covariance Flux Measurements Intensive Course will take place 24-26 November fully online, using the WebEx platform.

The course consists of presentations, lectures, and practical training sessions. Participants are each given an example dataset and expected to work on their own project. The aim of this is to learn in practice how to conduct processing, filtering, screening, gap filling, data handling and plotting of EC data. After the intensive three-day workshop, participants analyse their data with support from course tutors, and the results and challenges are discussed at a wrap-up session.

During the course, participants will also have the chance to get direct feedback and advice on their own project.

The course aims to support young researchers in initiating new projects and taking better advantage of existing Eddy Covariance infrastructures and data.

Course teachers include experts in micrometeorology as well as senior researchers working on different fields using Eddy Covariance flux data in their research. This follows the multidisciplinary, multi-scale approach of EMSAfrica, where Eddy Covariance flux data is linked with different on-site measurements and coupled with remote sensing data to produce models on Southern African vegetation patterns and carbon balance.

Lead teachers are Christian Brümmer (Thünen Institute for Climate-Smart Agriculture, Braunschweig, Germany) and Gregor Feig (South African Environmental Observation Network /Expanded Freshwater and Terrestrial Observation Network).

Who should apply:

Students and early-career researchers (MSc and PhD students and postdoctoral researchers) as well as technicians are encouraged to apply for the Winter School.

The course is primarily intended to participants from Angola, Namibia and South Africa. Applications from other (Southern) African countries will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
